The Christian-Orthodox Monastery of Arges was founded in 1514 by Neagoe Basarab, ruler (“voievod” and “domnitor”) of Wallachia.

Later it became a national symbol of beauty and spiritual resistance against the Ottoman pressures, and was chosen by King Carol I as Royal Necropolis in the 1880s.

The main church inspired also a legend in which its constructor, Master Manole, could finished it only after the supreme sacrifice of his wife Ana.
