Low-clouded June night: Thinking of the stars not seen And dreams not yet dreamed. Living at the California coast, where low clouds from the sea roll in more often than not on June nights, a star-lover often has to be content with dreams. Yet dreams are what poems are made of, and can sometimes foreshadow the future in technicolor! As Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote, "any dream will do." In 23/24 May Valentin Grigore was in La Palma, Canary Islands, next to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, to observe a new meteor shower, which came from Comet 209P/Linear. But the meteor activity was rather modest (he photographically caught only a Sporadic meteor), so all that remains is the hope that the Camelopardalids will impress on other occasion. Title: “Mars Desert by David A. Hardy (1972)” Caption: “For his 1972 book with Patrick Moore, Challenge of the Stars, Hardy painted this scene on Mars based on black-and-white images of Mars sent back by the Mariner probe in 1965. These showed Mars to be disappointingly Moonlike, with craters; later missions, and especially Viking, showed it to be a much more interesting world! They also showed the dark blue sky to be inaccurate.” Astronomical artists are sometimes divided into First Generation and Second Generation (and I suppose we now have even more). The first group were pioneers; they were the...

Why are we matter and not antimatter, or are we the latter and think that we’re not? Brought into contact the one with the other the two would annihilate right on the spot. Opposites attract— some do— but in this case it isn’t true, for in that mirror image clash the counterparts destroy their doppelgangers in a flash… and thus give rise to high-energy photons that is to say, to gamma rays, or other particles like antiprotons in what could be another phase… While an antiproton and a positron can form an atom antihydrogen that’s almost the norm of a...

(English translation from the Romanian  and photo by Andrei Dorian Gheorghe)   Science is just an earthly invention, Oh what a discovery among earthlings, I pretend I understand relativity, You pretend that the Universe is infinite, I pretend I know universal attraction, You still demonstrate among quanta, There are clusters of stars in nebulae, I pretend I can go to Mars, You want to make for me a spaceship Better than that which went to the Moon, I really pretend I learn what life is, You truly believe we make figuration In the tridimensional material Euclidean…   Science...
