GAM2013 News

GaN 2013Would you like to contribute to our understanding of the worldwide problem of light pollution? Then the GLOBE at Night 2013 campaign is your answer!  GLOBE at Night is an international campaign to raise awareness on the impact of light pollution by submitting simple readings to a website even via your smartphone.

Global Astronomy Month 2013 will run two GaN campaigns to which anyone can contribute – and for a change – you can contribute just the same if you do not have dark skies!  These will take place between 31 March – 9 April 2013 and between 29 April – 8 May 2013.

But isn’t light a good thing? Of course it is – but only if it is properly designed and installed.  Many times external lighting is installed such that it wastes its energy output into the night sky – where it has no use.

Does it matter? You bet it does! Energy waste is a waste of our money and of our finite energy resources.  In addition there are also issues related to animal and human health.  When was the last time you saw the Milky Way?  As stated by an IAU resolution the enjoyment and contemplation of the firmament should be considered a fundamental socio-cultural and environmental right of all citizens.

Make sure to visit also our own AWB Dark Sky Awareness blog during GAM which will feature various posts on dark sky awareness!
